Dear Friends,
Love, to be real, it must cost, it must hurt, it must empty us of ourselves.
As I sit here in an alcove on the floor of Lucas Oil Stadium waiting for my cell phone to charge, these words of Mother Teresa are on my heart, and I am thinking of you!
I’ve had the joy of meeting hundreds of people from all over the United States in the last 24 hours—which is only 0.3% of pilgrims in attendance. I even encountered a priest and his parishioners from Guam! (I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I forgot Guam is a US Territory.)
I have been moved by so many of our older brothers and sisters who are here—their faces radiating the light of Jesus as they gaze upon this profound sign of hope that is unfolding before us. And the young people here are rocking my world! They are all over the place!
And do you know why all of these encounters have been so beautiful? The answer is simple: because Jesus is here, and he’s invited us to come encounter him. And when we encounter Jesus, our encounters with one another are radically transformed!
Well, this was certainly clear tonight because we began this 10th National Eucharistic Congress on our knees, adoring our Eucharistic Lord. What more can I say? He’s the one that proves those beautiful words of Mother Teresa. Love, to be real, it must cost, it must hurt, it must empty us of ourselves.
